Seed starts in DWC

curious for anyone in here doing DWC how do you start your seeds if not using clones. I’ve done dwc with clones but never from seed.

I’m also curious what methods dwc folks are using. My immediate thought would be start in a rockwool starter cube.

Yes that or a root riot plug. I was reading online and it says you can start in the cube or traditional and do it in water or paper towel and once you have tail drip it into cube.

I’m a little late to the party here… My seed germination workflows for DWC are pretty similar to any seed prep. I just have the additional steps of preparing rockwool, which I would do for clones anyway.

I still soak the seeds in RO water with some hydrogen peroxide for about 24hr. While that is happening I’ll prepare rockwool by sterilizing it and then buffering it.

Pretty much as soon as I see a nub of a taproot crack the seed shells I move them into rockwool. The rockwool goes into a propagation tray with a dome until I see the taproot emerge through the bottom of the rockwool cube (using Grodan Delta4 blocks).

Then it’s pretty much into the bloombox for the rest of their lives.

Thanks. I got a couple towing currently. Used riot riot to rockwool grodan cubes

I’ve never used root riot pucks. Generally, I’ve considered them to be a peat-based media and always kept them away from processes that are based on inert grow medias.

That was something I picked up in my formative growing years, so I might not be totally correct in those assumptions. I believe I was told something to the effects of it’s water retention characteristics can inhibit proper drainage of things like rockwool or coco.

I haven’t had any issues starting seeds in straight rockwool, so I haven’t really felt much pressure to explore other processes.

I used to use rockwool cubes for a long time, they worked great until they didn’t (I’m sure it’s me not the rw). I tried this crushed hydroton stuff I found and I’m never going back. Almost impossible to overwater which I think was my main issue with the rw. I posted more about it in ‘troubleshooting’ if you are interested.
